Location: Bali, Indonesia

The Bali Writing & Storytelling Intensive is an opportunity to explore your stories in the mystical land of Bali. You don’t have to consider yourself a writer to join us, but you must be willing to call yourself one for the eight nights and ten days we’ll spend together.

The intensive, with writer Betsy Blankenbaker, begins at the enchanting hideaway of Bambu Indah where you’ll spend your first days focused on engaging your imagination and calling in an intention for your writing. Then we move to a private estate for five nights focused on intuitive flow and illumination of ideas for storytellers.

Part of the retreat will be spent at the popular Ubud Writers & Readers Festival where you’ll listen and engage with writers from around the world.

The intensive includes daily writing circles, five massages, Temple visits, local ceremonies, blessings & cultural experiences; and admission to the Ubud Writers Festival.

Your retreat begins the minute you sign up. You’ll be invited to join intimate monthly creative salons (via Zoom) with Betsy and a special guest.
June: Discover how saying “Yes” activates a creative flow. July: Why you don’t need to go to Bali to write! (Maybe you should stay home?!) August: Why your story matters - and will anyone want to read it? September: Why Bali? Why now? In Bali, the land of 1,000 temples, how will you honor your story?

The first three nights of the retreat are based at the enchanting property of Bambu Indah where you’ll immerse yourself in the culture of Bali by staying in your own antique Javanese teak wood home. The property is considered eco-chic with one of the best restaurants and sunset views on the island. Then we move to an elegant private estate where you’ll enjoy your own luxury suite with king bed. (Both properties have AC and WIFI.)

food and dining

Your retreat fees include daily breakfast, afternoon tea, and drinks & dinner on the opening and closing night of the intensive. The food in Bali is healthy and bountiful. Most of what you eat is harvested on the properties where you will be staying, making for a true farm-to-table experience. All dietary needs can be met.

Please note: Most lunches and dinners aren’t included. Depending on our daily schedule, you’ll have the option to dine together or make your own plans.

The intensive includes daily writing circles focused on non-fiction storytelling. No previous writing is needed to join the retreat only an interest in writing authentically about your life. During the week, we’ll be creating new material or rewriting your old stories in a new way.

You’ll listen as the group gives you valuable feedback on your writing and you’ll also meet with Betsy privately to discuss your story or book ideas. You’ll hear about why she chose to self-publish and she’ll offer resources if you are interested in publishing too.

Our group will spend time at the popular Ubud Writers & Readers Festival which coincides with the retreat. You’ll discover why stories engage you and why your story matters.

Self-care for writers: You’ll enjoy a full body massage by a local therapist within your first 24 hours of arrival to let your body and mind receive the warm touch of the Balinese spirit and prepare you for our time together. During the intensive, you’ll receive a total of five massages, including one four-handed massage where two therapists work on you at the same time.

During your free time, you can opt for other spa treatments, take a local yoga class, go shopping in Ubud, lounge by the eco-pools, and walk through the rice fields. Or, you can write in the private suite or home you’ll have during the Intensive.

While Bali offers endless cultural experiences, mostly you’ll be called to show up to dedicate time to your writing. Some Balinese experiences are part of the retreat; however, if you want to explore more of the culture, please consider adding time at the beginning or end of the retreat. The focus during the Intensive is your voice as a writer and storyteller.

Testimonials for Betsy Blankenbaker

The Bali retreat with Betsy was profound in so many ways it's even hard to describe but I'll try- magical, spiritual, beautiful, enlightening, warm, accepting, nourishing, rich....I could go on. If you've never been on a retreat of any kind, go on one of Betsy's. She is gentle, kind, and so full of love. She just gets it--whatever ‘it' is to you.

Going on a retreat led by Betsy Blankenbaker is pure bliss Last year I attended her retreat at Soulshine in Bali. No matter what happens she moves with ease and grace that is contagious. Betsy has many secret gems of people and places she will introduce you to. I appreciated her knowledge of this special island and its people.
